Addis Ababa, Sept 28 (Dimtsachin Yisema) --- Ethiopian Muslims held massive demonstrations in the capital Addis Ababa and different towns across the coun
try on Friday protesting against the planned election of Majlis leadership against the will of the Muslim population.

The demonstrations were held at Anwar Mosque in the capital Addis Ababa, Shewa Ber Mosque in Dessie (Amhara Region), Alkem Arada and Selam Mosques in Shashemene, East Shoa Zone of Oromia Region; and in Kemise town, Oromia Zone of the Amhara Region.

The election, slated for October 7, is rejected by Muslim communities throughout the country, but the so-called Ulama Council, backed by ruling party operatives, is desperately striving to carryout house-to-house voter registration using intimidation and different coercion methods.

Protestors at the different towns chanted slogans such as “Stop Running Illegal Election!”, “No election while our representatives are detained!”, “Let our voice be heard!”, “Stop Repression of Muslims!”

The number of Muslims joining in the weekly protests is ever-increasing both in the capital Addis Ababa and the regions as the government remains adamant to the legitimate demands of the Muslim community. Several Muslims in Addis Ababa are attending the weekly demonstrations at Anwar Mosque coming from areas far from the center.
